Loc H. Pham, OD
Greetings from Chandler, Arizona! I’m Loc Pham, a Doctor of Optometry specializing in orthokeratology. My journey into this field began in 2005 when the groundbreaking LORIC Study by Cho revealed the potential of orthokeratology in slowing down myopia progression. As a parent myself, I was driven by the desire to protect my children from inheriting my nearsightedness. Delving into research on school myopia shed light on how educational environments can contribute to increasing rates of nearsightedness.
This is my journey of discovery.

Corneal Reshaping Contact Lenses
After coming across several research studies, such as the CRAYON 2007 report by Walline, I was inspired to explore fresh viewpoints on myopia. This motivated me to seek ways to assist my own children and enhance my strategies for the well-being of all young people in Chandler, Arizona. I felt a personal responsibility to understand how we can minimize the chances of myopia development among kids. Delving into these new perspectives has been enlightening and empowering. It’s heartening to know that simple adjustments in our approach can make a big difference in promoting healthy vision for our youth. Let’s work together to create a brighter future with less risk of myopia for our children!

Visiting My Family in Vietnam
When I returned to Vietnam in 2011 and reunited with my family, it sparked a new perspective on the interplay between genetics and environment in shaping a person’s nearsightedness. Conducting eye exams for my 9 siblings, 12 nieces and nephews, and parents revealed their myopic status. While genetic factors play a role in nearsightedness, I observed a stark contrast between my relatives in Vietnam who rarely wore glasses and my immediate family from the United States who relied on vision correction aids like glasses or contact lenses.
I noticed a striking difference in the educational opportunities within my family. In the US, my relatives went to school, while in Vietnam, education was not as accessible for them. The American side dedicated time indoors to studying and work, whereas the Vietnamese family members spent most of their days outdoors. This contrast made me think about how outdoor activities could impact eyesight, particularly regarding myopia. It’s fascinating to see how our daily routines influence various aspects of our lives, even something as unexpected as vision health within a family context.
